OpenAI has introduced a new search engine feature to its ChatGPT chatbot, which directly threatens Google's years-long dominance over online search.

A spokesperson for OpenAI said, "We don't have any plans for ads" as it relates to ChatGPT Search.

This major update enables the AI to provide up-to-date information from the internet.

Real-time search represents a major upgrade to the ChatGPT model that, until now, had relied on a far more restricted dataset.

There's also a Chrome extension available that lets users set ChatGPT as their default search engine.

The company said the update will provide "fast, timely answers" and links to related web content that was restricted to traditional search engines.

"Search will be available at chatgpt.com and also in our desktop and mobile apps. Today, it will be available to all ChatGPT Plus and Team users, as well as those on the SearchGPT waitlist."

Enterprise and Edu users will get access in the coming weeks, and we plan to roll it out to all Free users over the next few months," the company said on its official site.

The homepage for ChatGPT now includes direct links to all types of sourced information on everything from the weather to market prices, sports scores, and breaking news. Many users already use ChatGPT as their default search tool, and OpenAI's ad-free model might prove quite a challenge for Google.

Of course, OpenAI has no plans for ads today, but that could change should it appease investors with what's likely a tripling of revenues by 2025. Meantime, as we covered earlier, Uber Technologies plans to release an AI-powered assistant that leverages OpenAI's technology to help drivers transition to electric vehicles, as part of its steps toward sustainability.
