Ransomware Attack Hits Blue Yonder, Disrupting Grocery Supplies in US and UK

A top software supply chain company that counts grocery stores in the US and UK and Fortune 500 companies among its clients reported Sunday that it had been hit with a ransomware attack over the weekend.

In an attack on Arizona-based software firm Blue Yonder, which was acquired by Panasonic in 2021, the private cloud computing service used by some of its customers had been knocked offline.

A spokesperson for Blue Yonder would not detail which customers were affected, including those in the US. But correspondence between Blue Yonder and its customers, reflects that the company is working to minimize any potential impact on US customers.

On November 21, 2024, Blue Yonder experienced disruptions in its managed services hosted environment, which were determined to be related to a ransomware incident," the company said in an initial public statement on Friday. On Saturday, Blue Yonder said it was making "steady progress" in restoration but did not give a timeline for when services would be restored.

The immediate fallout was evident within the UK itself, with two of the four largest grocery chains telling Media that they were implementing measures to deal with the outage.

"We have reverted to a backup process, but the outage has disrupted the smooth flow of goods to our stores," said the spokesman for Morrisons, which runs nearly 500 grocery stores across the UK.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury, another major grocery chain in the UK, said it had "contingency processes" to mitigate the Blue Yonder outage.

Many of the largest grocery chains in the US are customers of Blue Yonder, including Albertsons—the parent company of Safeway and Jewel-Osco, among others—and Kroger, which operates chains such as Ralphs and Fred Meyer. Albertsons and Kroger did not immediately return Media request for comments.

According to Blue Yonder's press releases, Procter & Gamble and Anheuser-Busch are other major companies that have used their products or services.
